Can you play rengar as a reaction(not on your turn) to a battlefield you have no units on? | tcgmode

So this happened yday. I was attacking one battlefield and had a unit on the other. And oponent reacted with playing rengar to the other battelfield where he had no units. Is rengar reaction speed only on battlefields there are units or is he always reaction speed?
