Questions about braid of fire | tcgmode

So reading this card, i get a red mana on upkeep, then for each age counter i have to pay mana per age counter or i sac the card? Am i understanding that right? When i looked up how the card works though, i saw people saying that id get a red mana per age counter that i can only use on my upkeep...
